The Australian singer-songwriter, Calum Hood, is known for being the bassist in the acclaimed pop rock band, 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS).
Age, Early Life, and Education Background
Calum Thomas Hood is a native of New South Wales, Australia, and was born under the Aquarius zodiac sign on 26 January 1996, which makes him 26 years old as of 2022. He is the son of David Hood, who works in the Coca-Cola Company, and his wife, Joy Hood, who is an employee of an unnamed superannuation firm. His mother is originally from Auckland in New Zealand while his father hails from Scotland. He was raised in a middle-class household alongside his older sister, Mali-Koa Hood, in Mount Druitt, New South Wales. His sister is now an accomplished singer who previously made a one-time appearance in the Australian reality TV show “The Voice”, but failed to make it to the end of series. Although many people assume that Calum is of Asian ethnicity, he is of Cook Island Māori ancestry from his mother’s side, and Scottish through his dad.
Calum was very physically active as a teenager; he had a keen interest in soccer and was very skilled at it, even visiting a training camp in Brazil to hone his skills, but quit the sport after he relocated to London, following the formation of his pop band. When he was asked during a previous interview about what happened after he quit football, Calum recalled that ‘there was a period of a month where my parents thought I was making the worst decision of my life. My mum threw out all the clothes in my closet. And I left … just being like, I made one of the biggest decisions.’
The 5 Seconds of Summer bassist attended Northwest Primary School for his early education – where he met and became good friends with his future bandmate, Michael Clifford. He later went to Northwest Christian College for high school, and befriended his other future bandmate, Luke Hemmings. Thomas was actively involved in music when he was in high school, and once participated in the school’s talent show, performing a cover of one of Secondhand Serenade band’s songs. However, he dropped out in 11th grade to pursue his musical career.
