Who is Tracy Reiner?

American actress, film producer and director Tracy Reiner (nee Henry) was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA, on 7 July 1964, making her zodiac sign Cancer. She’s had roles in more than 30 movies and TV series, and is perhaps still best known for her playing of Thornburg’s Assistant in the hit 1988 action thriller movie “Die Hard”, which John McTiernan directed, and which starred Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia. The movie follows a New York police officer as he’s trying to save his wife and other hostages from a group of German terrorists; it won eight of its 18 award nominations, including four Oscar nominations for Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects.

Tracy’s still today active in the movie industry, and is currently shooting for the upcoming biographical film “Bogie and Bacall”.

Education and early life

Tracy was raised in Albuquerque by her father Michael Henry, and mother Carole Penny Marshall who was an actress, film producer and director; Carole appeared in 73 movies and TV series, but passed away on 17 December 2018, aged 75. Carole married her second husband, American actor and moviemaker Robert Norman Reiner when Tracy when seven years old, and who then adopted her.

She looked up to her mother while growing up, and thus fell in love with acting at quite an early age. Tracy was 13 when she launched her career, playing Helen in the 1977 episode “Tag Team Wrestling” of the family comedy series “Laverne & Shirley”, in which her mother starred alongside Cindy Williams and David L. Lander; Tracy then also appeared in the series’ 1979 episode “Bad Girls”, and 1981 episode “Young at Heart”.

She attended a local high school in Albuquerque, and upon matriculating in 1982, continued pursuing acting, rather than a college degree.

Tracy’s debut film appearance was in the 1984 romantic comedy drama “The Flamingo Kid”, directed by Garry Marshall, and which starred Matt Dillon, Hector Elizondo and Molly McCarthy. It follows a boy who’s just matriculated from high school, and has met Phil Brody at the beach club Flamingo; the film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Richard Crenna).

A couple of Tracy’s following roles were in the 1985 romantic comedy drama “The Sure Thing”, the 1986 romantic comedy “Nothing in Common”, and the romantic thriller comedy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in the same year.

She attracted a lot of attention with her portrayal of Emily in the evergreen 1989 romantic comedy drama “When Harry Met Sally…”, which Rob Reiner directed, and which starred Carrie Fisher, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Tracy was then cast to appear in the 1989 horror thriller “Masque of the Red Death”, the 1990 comedy “Partners in Life”, and the 1991 romantic comedy drama “Frankie and Johnny”.

In 1995, she played Mary Haise in the critically acclaimed historical adventure drama “Apollo 13”, which Ron Howard directed, and which starred Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Tom Hanks. It follows NASA as they’re trying to rescue their Apollo 13 astronauts, and the film won 30 of its 89 award nominations, including two Oscar wins for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. The remainder of the ‘90s saw Tracy appear in the 1996 musical comedy drama “That Thing You Do!”, the 1998 comedy “With Friends Like These”, and the 1999 romantic comedy drama “The Other Sister”.

She was cast to play Dr. Fritzi Haller in the 2001 romantic family comedy “The Princess Diaries”, which Garry Marshall directed, and which starred Hector Elizondo, Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. It follows 16 years old Mia Thermopolis who’s just learned that she’s the heir to the Genovia’s throne, and the film won three of its 14 award nominations.

Tracy’s since appeared in only seven movies, with three of her most recent roles having been in the 2006 war drama “Stay Awake”, the 2010 romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day”, and the 2015 comedy drama “Chloe” and “Theo”.

Roles in TV series

Tracy’s had roles in only two TV series, including “Laverne & Shirley”. She also played Betty Horn in six episodes of the 1993 sports comedy “A League of Their Own”, created by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, and which starred Sam McMurray, Carey Lowell and Christine Elise. It follows the girls who are playing for the professional baseball team the Rockford Peaches, and the series was nominated for two awards.

Other credits

Tracy directed the short documentary movies “2013 Universe Multicultural Film Festival Promo”, “2014 Universe Multicultural Film Festival Promo” and “The Universe Multicultural Film Festival in 2015”.

She produced the 2020 documentary movie “Rodman”, and is the producer of the upcoming documentary films “Children of the Revolution: Tune Back In”, and “Hollywood Post 43”.

Tracy received special thanks for the 1990 biographical movie “Awakenings”, and for the 2021 short comedy film “Glory & Injustice”.

Tracy prefers not to speak about her love life in public, but it’s still widely known that she’s today both a wife and mother. She’s married to American Matthew Theodore Conlan, but neither has shared the date of their wedding, nor how long they had dated prior to exchanging vows. They have five children together, which is why Tracy eventually chose to decline many roles, to concentrate on raising them. Although there’s little information about the children, as Tracy and Matthew prefer to keep them away from media, it’s known that their daughter Bella Conlan was born on 23 May 2005.
