Who is Katherine Moennig?

American actress Katherine Sian ‘Kate’ Moennig was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, on 29 December 1977, making her zodiac sign Capricorn. She’s had roles in nearly 30 movies and TV series, and is perhaps still best known for her playing of Gloria in the critically acclaimed 2011 mystery crime movie “The Lincoln Lawyer”, which Brad Furman directed, and which starred Ryan Phillippe, Marisa Tomei and Matthew McConaughey. It follows an attorney who’s been hired to defend a wealthy man, while he’s now learned that his client’s actually guilty of even more crimes; the movie was nominated for an Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Saturn Award for Best Action/Adventure Film.

Katherine’s still today quite active in the movie industry, and is currently shooting for the upcoming horror thriller film “Squealer”, portraying one of the lead characters Earline.

Education and early life

Katherine was raised in Philadelphia an only child, by her father William H. Moennig III who is of German descent and was a violin maker, and her mother Mary Zahn who was a Broadway dancer. Katherine’s half-sister is American actress Blythe Katherine Danner, which means that she’s also a cousin of famous actors Jacob Danner Paltrow and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Katherine fell in love with acting while attending a local high school in Philadelphia, but made a promise to her parents that she wouldn’t pursue acting until she was finished with her education; some of the other activities in which she was interested during her teenage years were playing sports, especially tennis, dancing and running track.

Upon matriculating in 1996, she moved to New York City and enrolled at American Academy of Dramatic Arts, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000.

Katherine’s debut TV series role was her portrayal of Jacqueline ‘Jake’ Pratt in eight episodes of the 2000 drama “Young Americans”, created by Steve Antin, and which starred Mark Famiglietti, Kate Bosworth and Rodney Scott. It follows a group of students who are attending the elite Connecticut school Rawley Summer Academy.

In 2001, Katherine played Melissa Cobin in the episode “For Love or Money” of the mystery crime drama “Law & Order”, and the year 2003 saw her play Cheryl Avery in the episode “Fallacy” of the mystery crime drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.

Between 2004 and 2009, Katherine played Shane McCutheon in 70 episodes of the romantic drama “The L Word”, which Ilene Chaiken and Michelle Abbott created, and which starred Laurel Holloman, Leisha Hailey and Jennifer Beals. It follows a group of lesbian women from Los Angeles, California, and the series won five of its 30 award nominations.

In 2010, Kate could have been seen playing supporting characters in the drama “Three Rivers”, and mystery crime drama “Dexter”.

Between 2013 and 2019, she portrayed Lena in the crime drama “Ray Donovan”, which Ann Biderman created, and which starred Dash Mihok, Eddie Marsan and Live Schreiber. It follows a professional ‘fixer’ who can only be hired by the wealthy, and the series won five of its 47 award nominations.

Since 2019, Kate’s been playing Shane McCutheon in the drama “The L Word: Generation Q”, which serves as a sequel to “The L Word”; the series has won one of its five award nominations.

Katherine’s debut film appearance was in the 2000 short romantic drama “The Ice People”, and a couple of her following roles were in the 2001 short drama “Slo-Mo”, the 2001 romantic crime drama “Love the Hard Way” and the 2001 drama “The Shipping News”.

The year 2004 saw Katherine play Eva in the comedy “Invitation to a Suicide”, written and directed by Loren Marsh, and which starred Pablo Schreiber, Marcin Gajowczyk and Tobi Kanter. It follows a Polish immigrant living in America, who’s selling tickets to his suicide so that he could pay for his father’s medical treatment. Katherine could then have been seen playing Candace in the 2006 romantic comedy drama “Art School Confidential”, Jilly in the 2009 adventure drama “Everybody’s Fine”, and Athletic Woman in the 2010 short comedy “Lez Chat”.

She played Erica Lonsdale in the 2012 action mystery adventure “Gone”, directed by Heitor Dhalia, and which starred Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter and Wes Bentley; it follows a woman who’s searching for her kidnapped sister.

Katherine’s also known for her playing of the lead character Hallelujah in the 2017 biographical adventure drama “Lane 1974”, written and directed by S. J. Chiro, and which also starred Sophia Mitri Schloss and Sara Coates. It follows 13 years old Lane and her brother and sister as they’re being raised in Northern California by their mother Hallelujah – the movie won four of its seven award nominations.

Katherine’s since appeared in only one film: the 2022 drama “Ray Donovan: The Movie”.

The two women haven’t spoken about how and when they met, but it’s believed that they were introduced by a mutual friend in 2015, when Katherine attended one of Ana and her rock ‘n’ roll band CSS’ concerts; Ana’s the band’s keyboardist and guitarist. Besides CSS, Ana’s also known for being one half of the DJ duo MeuKu, with the other half being CSS member Luiza Sa.

Katherine has only recently opened up about her sexuality; she came out in 2019, and then revealed that she’d married Ana two years earlier.

She hasn’t mentioned the women whom she had perhaps dated prior to meeting Ana; Katherine’s married to Ana Rezende as of October 2022, and doesn’t have children.

Katherine was roommates with American actress Leisha Hailey and Canadian actress Mia Kirshner while they were all shooting for the series “The L Word” in 2004.

She’s passionate about sports, and is trained in fencing.

Katherine’s revealed that she’d probably be an FBI agent or a marine biologist if she hadn’t succeeded in the film industry, while she’s also stated that she wanted to be a doorman when she was a little girl.

She auditioned for a role in the 1999 biographical crime movie “Boys Don’t Cry”, which went on to win 51 of its 89 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Hilary Swank).

Katherine’s amassed over 800,000 followers on Instagram, and has posted more than 700 pictures and videos onto the social media network.

Her favorite actresses are Jodie Foster and Rosie O’Donnell, while some of her favorite movies include “Hotel Artemis”, “Elysium” and “Carnage”.
