Who was Charles Milles Manson?
American criminal and musician Charles Milles Manson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio USA, on 12 November 1934, meaning that his zodiac sign was Scorpio. His Manson Family cult was held responsible for nine murders, while Charles was convicted of conspiracy to murder seven people.
He was raised in Cincinnati by his mother Kathleen Manson-Bower-Cavender (nee Maddox) who was 15 when she gave birth to him, and who died in 1973, aged 54; his biological father was believed to be Colonel Walker Henderson Scott Sr, because Kathleen had filed a paternity suit against him in 1937, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Walker wasn’t really in the army, but rather a con artist. While pregnant, Kathleen married dry cleaning business employee William Eugene Manson; they eventually divorced, but Charles kept the last name Manson. After Kathleen and her brother Luther were arrested for assault and robbery and sentenced to five to 10 years behind bars, Charles lived with this aunt and uncle; Kathleen was pardoned in 1942, and she and Charles move to Charleston, West Virginia prior to moving again, this time to Indianapolis.
Charles said that his problems with the authorities began when he was nine, as he had set his school on fire. He was 13 when sent to attend Gibault School for Boys, a school for delinquents run by Catholic priests, however, Charles eventually ran away and slept under bridges and in the woods. He robbed a grocery store in 1948, aged 15, and then began working for Western Union as a message deliverer; he robbed people every day, and was caught after around half a year; the judge sending Charles to the juvenile facility Boys Town. After only four days there, Charles and another student, Blackie Nielson stole a car and a gun, and committed two robberies; Charles was caught during another robbery two weeks later, and sent to Indiana Boys School.
Charles was often raped at the school, and he had 18 failed escape attempts; he and two other boys eventually managed to run away, and went on to steal cars and rob filling stations until Charles was caught and sent to National Training School for Boys. He was 17 when transferred to Natural Bridge Honor Camp in October 1951, and three months later, he was caught raping a boy at knifepoint, and was thus moved to the Federal Reformatory, and then to a maximum security reformatory in Ohio. He was released because of his good behavior in May 1954, to live with his uncle and aunt.
He married a waitress in January 1955, stole a car in Ohio and came with his pregnant wife to Los Angeles; he was caught and put on a five-year probation, but was then arrested in March 1956 and sentenced to three years behind bars. His son Charles Manson Jr. was born while he was in jail.
He married prostitute Leona, Luther’s mother, following his release and then took her and another prostitute to work in New Mexico; Charles was arrested in June 1960, returned to Los Angeles and sentenced to 10 years behind bars.
He was released in 1967, and then began using LSD and reading various books; it was Robert A. Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land” that had a strong impact on him, and Charles then went on to preach his own philosophy based on the book, as well as on scientology and the Bible. His first follower was librarian Mary Brunner, and Charles went on to live with her; they were then joined by runaway teenager Lynette ‘Squeky’ Fromme, and others who were emotionally insecure. In around a year, the Manson cult numbered around 20 members.
In August 1969, several of the cult’s members committed murders, but it was the murder of famous American actress Sharon Tate that shocked the public the most; Sharon and four others were killed at her home on 8 and 9 August 1969. The State of California vs. Manson trial began on 15 July 1970, and Manson and three others were sentenced to death on 29 March 1971, however, as the death sentence was ruled unconstitutional a year later, Charles sentence was commuted to life behind bars with a possible parole.
He died in jail from cardiac arrest caused by colon cancer on 19 November 2017, aged 83.
