Renee Mary Jane Rapp was born on 10 January 2000 in Huntersville, North Carolina, USA, the daughter of Charlie and Denise Rapp; she has a younger brother named Charles.

Renee went to Hopewell High School in her hometown for three years, during which time she was involved in the school’s theater program, while she was also a member of the varsity women’s golf team.

She then transferred to Northwest School of the Arts, as her acting talent was recognized early on. She continued to appear in school plays, and her theater teacher, Corey Mitchell, discussed her talents, stating that she has a special distinction, and that her voice and the emotion she puts into her performance are easily recognized by the audience.

She starred in the school production of the play “Big Fish” for which she won the Best Actress award at the Blimey Awards. Moreover, she won the Jimmy Award at the tenth annual ceremony in New York City in the category of Best Performance by an Actress, ahead of 40 other contestants for the award.

This win earned her a scholarship worth $10,000; she then enrolled in the musical theater program at Texas State University.

Career Beginnings

After winning the Jimmy Award, Renee’s name started circulating in theaters, and she was chosen for the role of Wendla in the play “Spring Awakening”, in Theatre Charlotte’s production, earning a Broadway World Charlotte Award nomination in the category for Best Actress in a Musical for her work in the play.

Next, Renee participated in The Educational Theatre Foundation’s fourth annual Broadway Back to School event, which was held at Feinsten’s/54 Below. Then in 2019, she performed at BroadwayCon’s 2019 Star to Be event, in which she sang “They Just Keep Moving the Line”, taken from the soundtrack of the musical drama series “Smash”.

She continued to work on her musical theatre career, and in March 2019, again performed at Feinstein’s/54 Below’s 54 Sings, performing “The High School Musical Trilogy”.

Rise to Prominence

Gradually, Renee was becoming more popular, and in May 2019, she was announced as the new Regina George in the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical “Mean Girls”, which premiered on 7 June 2019 and had a limited run until 26 June. After the initial success, Renee was named a star in the making, and the play got its permanent run, starting 10 September 2019 and running until 12 March 2020, when it was announced that it would be closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and Broadway shut down in accordance with the physical distance requirements.

When the theaters reopened, it was announced that the show wouldn’t continue its run, however, Renee found a new engagement, and gave a one-night performance at Feinstein’s/54 Below.

To speak of her on-screen success, Renee has only one role – In October 2020, she was named as Leighton Murray, one of the four main girls in the HBO Max TV comedy series “The Sex Lives of College Girls”. The series follows four 18-year-old ‘freshwomen’ roommates at Essex College in Vermont, their misadventures, fights, sexual activities and other adventures while living together. The series was created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, and has earned several award nominations, including a GLAAD Media nomination for Outstanding New TV series.

With the second season scheduled to premiere, Renee will make her return to the show and continue her coming-out story.

Music Career

Additional to acting, Renee is a professional musician. She released her debut music video in June 2022, entitled “Tattoos“, which already has around 400,000 views on her official YouTube channel. She continued to work on new music, and a couple of months later, the second music video was out, this time for the song “In The Kitchen“, with over 350,000 views.

Since then, Renee has released one more single, “Don’t Tell My Mom“, which already has close to 500,000 views on YouTube, having come only a month previously.

When asked about a debut full-length album, Renee hasn’t said anything with 100% certainty, and that she is currently happy releasing songs one at a time.
