Dave was born in Warren, Ohio USA, on 14 January 1969 – his zodiac sign is Capricorn, and he holds American nationality.
He’s probably known best for being the founder of the rock ‘n’ roll band Foo Fighters, and is today their singer, guitarist and songwriter. Dave was raised in Warren alongside his sister Lisa, by their father James Harper Grohl who was a newswriter, and their mother Virginia Jean (nee Hanlon) who was a teacher. James and Virginia divorced when Dave was seven, and he and his sister were then raised by their mother. James passed away aged 76 in 2014, Dave was 12 when he started taking guitar lessons but disliked them, so went on to teach himself, and began playing in a band with his friends; he turned to punk rock music after having attended a concert of Naked Raygun in 1982.
Dave studied at Thomas Jefferson High School, but his mother chose to transfer him to Bishop Ireton High School because of his cannabis-smoking habits; he transferred again to Annandale High School when he was 17, and then dropped out. It was when he was 17 that he lied about his age, and joined the hardcore punk band Scream as their drummer; this was also the reason behind his dropping out of high school. Dave stayed with them for around three years, when their bassist Skeeter Thompson quit while they were on a tour, which then led to their disbandment. Dave wasn’t sure about what to do with his career after Kurt’s death, and his initial idea was to join another band, but then changed his mind, recruited guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, and with them formed Foo Fighters, and they released their eponymous debut album in July 1995. Their second album “The Colour and the Shape” came out in May 1997, while a couple of their following albums were “There is Nothing to Left to Lose” (1999), “One by One” (2002) and “In Your Honor” (2005). The Foo Fighters’ sixth album “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” was released on 25 September 2007, and their seventh album “Wasting Light” followed on 12 April 2011, becoming their first album to top the US charts.
Their eighth album “Sonic Highways” came out on 10 November 2014, and was followed by their ninth “Concrete and Gold” on 15 September 2017. Most recently, on 5 February 2021, Foo Fighters released their 10th album, “Medicine at Midnight”, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Prior to meeting Violet’s mother, Dave was married to photographer Jennifer Leigh Youngblood from 1994 to 1997.
