Buddy was raised in Hoboken alongside his four sisters, by their Italian mother who was born in Altamura and their Italian father who was born in Lipari.
He became interested in baking while attending Ridgefield Park High School, and thus began taking baking lessons at Bergen County Technical School; it was his father who was the owner at Carlo’s Bakery, and Buddy began working in it aged 11.
Buddy was 17 when his father passed away, and he thus took over the family business; his mother eventually married her second husband, Sergio.
The show “Cake Boss” made Buddy and his cake shop very popular, so much so that he went on to open 17 more bakeries; in 2012, the newspaper “The Hudson Reporter” named Buddy amongst the 50 most influential people in Hudson County.
Seven of Buddy’s bakeries are in New Jersey, while some of his others are in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Orlando, Florida.
In June 2014, he launched his catering and event planning company Buddy V’s Events.
The year 2016 saw Buddy and the company Whole Earth Sweetener Co. collaborate on the campaign Rethink Sweet, which aimed to launch a line of lower and zero-calorie sweeteners, hoping to make cakes and cookies healthier.
Buddy partnered with The Pound Bakery in 2018 to launch a new line of pet treats together, and the same year saw him launch his new company Buddy Valastro Foods, which today collaborates with a couple of other companies to make Italian Biscotti cookies, buttercream icing and fondant.
Buddy has had some problems with the authorities, as he was arrested on 13 November 2014 for drunk driving; he paid a $300 fine, and had his driver’s license suspended for three months.
In September 2020, Buddy had to undergo two surgeries after his right hand had been impaled by a bowling pinsetter.
The success of Buddy’s show “Cake Boss” led to the release of many spin-offs, such as “Next Great Baker” in 2010, “Kitchen Boss” in 2011, and “Bake You Rich” in 2013. Since 2018, he has been hosting the reality game-show “Bake It Like Buddy”, in which he’s today starring alongside Ralph ‘Ralphie Boy’ Attanasia III and Chad Durkin; each episode follows two families as they compete in cooking.
