A renowned feature, documentary, and television director, Sandy Smolan was born in 1954; although he hasn’t revealed his exact birthdate, it’s known that he hails from New York City, USA, holds American nationality, and his ethnicity is Caucasian. Early life and education
Sandy was raised in New York, but since he prefers to keep his private life away from the public eye, he hasn’t disclosed any information regarding his childhood, parents or any siblings.
He attended a local high school, and upon matriculating in 1972, enrolled at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Philosophy, and Religion in 1976.
Sandy started his career in the movie industry as a producer in 1981, with the documentary movie “The Cowboy, the Craftsman and the Ballerina”, followed by his work as the producer and director of movies such as “A Day in the Life of Hawaii”, and “Rachel River”, which brought him a nomination for Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Dramatic in 1988.
In the following years, Sandy directed series such as “L.A. Law”, “Northern Exposure”, and “Class of ‘96”, among others, and in 1989 was nominated for Daytime Emmy Award Special Class Directing for his work on the episode “Taking a Stand” of the series “ABC Afterschool Specials”.
Some of his notable works are the movie “12 Stones”, which brought him Newport Beach Film Festival Jury Award for Best Short Documentary in 2009, and “The Click Effect”, for which he won the Sandy Advanced Imaging Society Lumiere Award Best VR Documentary, in 2016.
Since 1991, he’s been the owner, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Director of the company Luminous Content, and since 2016, he’s been working as CEO and co-founder of VR Micro theaters for Science Centers, museums, aquariums, and planetariums.
