Early life and education
Melanie was raised in Los Angeles alongside her younger sister Jillian Kristin Hervey and younger brother Devin, by their mother and their father Ramon Hervey II, who was a public relations specialist; Melanie also has a half-sister Sasha Gabriella Fox from her mother’s second marriage. Her sister Jillian is today a famous dancer and singer, and is one half of the R&B duo Lion Babe.
Melanie grew up being interested mostly in dancing, and her mother found her a private instructor when she was nine years old.

She’s perhaps still known best for having been the first African-American woman to become Miss America, in 1983; a year later, the magazine “Penthouse” revealed that it would be publishing her nude photographs, and Vanessa was thus forced by Miss America Organization to drop her title, which was then given to the second-placed Miss New Jersey Suzette Charles.
