McHugh made her first theatrical appearance aged seven, when she was cast as Mary in the musical “The Secret Garden”. She later made her TV debut with the guest-starring role of Jacey in an episode of the documentary series “A Haunting” entitled “Tunnel of Death.” The show premiered on Destination America in 2016 and is about the lives of several victims who have experienced paranormal events.

Lia caught the public’s eye when she was cast as Summer Bird Sister in the crime-drama “Hot Summer Nights” in 2017. The film is Elijah Bynum’s directorial debut, and follows the story of a teenage drug dealer, Daniel – played by Timothee Chalamet – who struggles to balance his romantic life and successful drug empire in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It also stars Alex Roe, Maika Monro, and Mia Mitchell. Lia later played one of her most important roles as Abby in the Marcel Sarmiento-directed supernatural horror movie “Totem” in the same year, starring alongside the producer, writer,and actor Evan Dickson, Kerris Dorsey, and the Canadian actor James Tupper.

In 2018, McHugh featured in another horror film entitled “Along Came the Devil”, which follows the story of Ashley played by Sydney Sweeney, who is raised in a troubled family and finds herself linked to a dangerous demonic force when she tries finding a connection.
