Juice WRLD remains remembered for his success in emo rap; his stage name was derived from the 1992 crime thriller movie “Juice”, which starred Omar Epps and Tupac Shakur, and he revealed that Juice WRLD means to take over the world.
He was only four when he began playing the piano, and his mother paid for his lessons. Juice WRLD spent his early life in Chicago, and he, his mother and brother moved to Homewood, Illinois when he was 13; he studied at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, and matriculated in 2017.
Carmella didn’t allow her sons to listen to rap music while they were growing up, and Juice WRLD learned about rock ‘n’ roll and pop musicians through a variety of video games, including “Guitar Hero” and “Ton Hawk’s Pro Skater”; some of the singers and bands which Juice WRLD looked up to while growing up were Black Sabbath, Blink-182 and Billy Idol.
He began abusing drugs as a teenager, and was 12 when he tried lean for the first time, a ‘recreational drug beverage’, made by mixing a soft drink with a cold syrup. Juice WRLD was also addicted to cigarettes, but quit before turning 20, ironically because of health issues.
He launched his rap career when he released his debut single “Forever” on SoundCloud in 2015; he was known as JuicetheKidd at that time, but his friends later encouraged him to change his stage name, believing that it would benefit his career.
Juice WRLD’s first song to attract attention – “Too Much Cash” – was released in 2017, and was by American record produced Nicholas ‘Nick’ Mira; Juice WRLD was employed at a factory while working on his way up in the music industry, to be able to financially support himself.
He released his first extended play (EP) “9 9 9” on 15 June 2017, and following its success was signed to Grade A Productions.
Juice WRLD’s EP “Nothings Different” came out in December 2017, comprising only three songs, and he then signed a $3 million contract with Interscope Records; his single “Lucid Dreams” peaked at #74 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while “All Girls Are the Same” peaked at #92.
His debut album “Goodbye & Good Riddance” was released on 23 May 2018, while his EP “Too Soon..” followed on 19 June; one of the EP’s two songs “Legends” peaked at #29 on Billboard Hot 100. Juice WRLD’s second album “Death Race for Love” came out on 8 March 2019, and peaked at #1 on Billboard 200.
His final release, prior to his death, was his single “Bandit”, which came out in October 2019.
Juice WRLD didn’t speak a lot about his love life, but it’s believed that he had dated and slept with many girls. He revealed in November 2018 that he had begun dating non-celebrity American girl Ally Lotti, and they were living together in Los Angeles at the time of his death.
Juice WRLD was flying on a private jet on 8 December 2019, when law enforcement officers were informed that there were drugs and guns on the plane. Around 32kgs of marijuana were found, while Juice WRLD had swallowed a couple of unknown pills to hide them from the police, which caused him to convulse and have seizures – he died at the Advocate Christ Medical Center.
