Edward Lyluph Abel Smith was born in 1978, in Hertfordshire, England, the son of Robert Ralph Abel Smith and his wife Linette J. Branson. Through his mother, he’s closely related to Richard Branson, the English billionaire and the founder of the Virgin Group conglomerate.

His parents divorced when he was a toddler, and his mother remarried Robin Brockway. He grew up in Parsons Green, South-West London, with his four brothers.
