Australian actress, screenwriter, director and singer-songwriter Alice Englert, was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 15 June 1994, making her zodiac sign Gemini. She’s had roles in over 20 movies and TV series, and is perhaps best known for her playing of the lead character Lena Duchannes in the 2013 romantic movie “Beautiful Creatures”, written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, and which also starred Viola Davis and Emma Thompson. The movie follows Ethan Wate who’s recently met mysterious girl Lena Duchannes, and who are now together discovering dark secrets about their families; the movie was nominated for nine awards.
Education and early life
Alice was raised in Sydney alongside her siblings Jasper and Gabriel, by their mother Dame Elizabeth Jane Campion who’s a New Zealand moviemaker, and their father Colin Englert who’s an Australian moviemaker; Alice’s maternal grandmother was Edith Campion, a famous New Zealand actress and screenwriter, and her maternal grandfather was New Zealand actor and theatre director Richard Meckiff Campion.
Alice often travelled while growing up, mostly because of her parents’ professions, and she thus studied at schools in England, Italy, New York State, New Zealand and Australia. When she was seven, her parents divorced and she stayed with her mother.

It follows the lives of teenagers Ginger and Rosa as they’re growing up in London in the ‘60s, during the Cuban Missile Crisis; the movie won four of its 12 award nominations.
In 2013, Alice played Lucy in the popular mystery horror thriller “In Fear”, written and directed by Jeremy Lovering, and in which she starred alongside Iain De Caestecker and Allen Leech. Alice went on to play Dolly in the 2015 romantic action adventure “The Lovers”, and then portrayed Thomasin in the 2016 drama “The Rehearsal”. In 2019, she was cast to play the lead character Mara in the thriller drama “Them That Follow”, which Dan Madison Savage and Britt Poulton wrote and directed, and which also starred Kaitlyn Dever and Olivia Colman. It follows a pastor’s daughter who knows a secret which could destroy her community; the film won one of its six award nominations.

Alice’s debut TV series role was her playing of Hope in the 2014 historical war mini-series “New Worlds”, starring alongside Jamie Dornan and Freya Mavor; set in the 1680s, it follows a young lady who’s fallen in love with a criminal in England, and a robber’s son who’s in love with an anti-monarchist in Massachusetts.
In 2015, Alice portrayed Lady Pole in all the seven episodes of the historical war fantasy mini-series “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell”, which won three of its 11 award nominations, and she then played Mary in seven episodes (2015) of the critically acclaimed mystery crime drama “Top of the Lake”, created by her mother Jane, and Gerard Lee, and which starred Elisabeth Moss, David Wenham and Peter Mullan. It follows the disappearance of a pregnant 12 years old girl from New Zealand; the series aired from 2013 to 2017, and won 22 of its 97 award nominations.
In 2020, Alice played Nurse Dolly in six episodes of the historical crime drama “Ratched”, and then Teresa Knowlton in three episodes of the 2021 crime thriller mini-series “The Serpent”.
