O.J. was raised in San Francisco by his father Jimmy Lee Simpson who was a chef, bank custodian and drag queen, and mother Eunice (nee Durden) who worked as a hospital administrator; Jimmy died of AIDS in 1986, several years after revealing that he was gay. O.J, his two sisters and a brother were raised by their mother following their parents’ separation in 1952, but lived in poverty.

He joined the street gang Persian Warriors when he was 14, and was arrested three times in the following two years. O.J. studied at Galileo High School, and played football for the Galileo Lions, thus finding a way to stay away from street life; he matriculated in 1965. He went on to attend City College of San Francisco, and after winning the Prune Bowl with them, O.J. transferred to the University of Southern California on a football scholarship.

He graduated in 1969 and was picked by the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League (AFL), but failed to fulfill expectations, as he averaged only 622 yards per season in his first three years. After Lou Saban became the Bills’ coach in 1971 and made O. J. the centerpiece of the team’s offense, O.J. went on to become one of the best Football players in the National Football League (NFL), as the Bills had moved from AFL to NFL; he was also presented with the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in 1973.

He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 1978, and retired following the loss against the Atlanta Falcons on 16 December 1979.

O. J. had launched his acting career in the ‘70s, and appeared in the 1974 drama movie “The Klansman”, the 1976 disaster thriller movie “The Cassandra Crossing”, and the 1977 mini-series “Roots”; he continued acting following his retirement from football, and appeared in the 1987 comedy film “Back to the Beach”, as well as in all three “The Naked Gun” movies released in 1988, 1991 and 1994.

O.J. met his future second wife Nicole Brown while she was working as a waitress at a nightclub in 1977, and began an affair with her; it’s widely believed that O.J. divorced his first wife Marguerite only because of Nicole. Even though he and Nicole divorced in 1992, they still managed to reconcile in 1993, but then split again.

On 12 June 1994, Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman were found dead in front of Nicole’s condo in Los Angeles, and O.J. immediately became the lead suspect because of his history of domestic violence. After the police had found enough evidence, a warrant was issued for his arrest; O.J. stated, in an agreement with his lawyers that he would turn himself in on 17 June, but failed to do so. He was then involved in a low-speed police pursuit, his former teammate and best friend Al Cowlings driving him in his 1993 Ford Bronco SUV; the chase was broadcast live on all major TV networks, and it’s believed that close to 100 million people were watching it.

O.J.’s trial lasted for 11 months, and ended with a ‘not guilty’ verdict on 3 October 1995; following this, Ron Goldman’s family filed a civil lawsuit against O.J, and a civil jury in Santa Monica, California found him guilty of Ron Goldman’s death on 5 February 1997. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages, and it’s believed that he’s been paying this off to this day.

O. J. went on to have many problems with the law, and was on 5 December 2008 sentenced to spend 33 years behind bars on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping; he was granted parole and released on 1 October 2017, while he was released from his parole on 14 December 2021.
