He was raised in Chicago alongside his two siblings and three half-siblings, by his American mother Joanne who was an elementary school teacher, while his father, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, wasn’t around; Joanne married Lucious when Kelly was five, and the two apparently got along well. Kelly’s revealed that he was eight when his first girlfriend Lulu drowned, and that the event motivated him to start writing songs.

He was sexually abused by an older female family member from the age of eight through 14, while Kelly’s younger brother Carey’s revealed that he was sexually abused by their older sister Theresa. Kelly was also abused by a male friend of the family when he was 10, while he was shot in the shoulder when he was 11 by a group of boys who wanted to steal his bicycle. Kelly studied at Kenwood Academy, and during his time there won first prize in the school talent show; it was his music teacher who persuaded him to pursue music instead of basketball, but then after having been diagnosed with dyslexia, he dropped out of Kenwood.

Kelly and three others formed the band Musically Gifted Men (MGM) in 1990; they signed a contract with Tavdash Records in the same year, and released the single “Why You Wanna Play Me”, but then disbanded.

Kelly signed a contract with Jive Records in 1991, and his debut album “Born into the ‘90s” was released in the following year; his second album “12 Play” came out on 9 November 1993, and spent 12 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart. His next album “R. Kelly” was released on 14 November 1995, and established him as one of the most popular R&B singers in the USA; his most popular single, “I Believe I Can Fly” was released on 26 November 1996.

Some of Kelly’s following albums were “R”, released on 17 November 1998, “TP-2.com” on 7 November 2000 and “The Best of Both Worlds” on 24 January 2002. His album “Chocolate Factory” came out on 18 February 2003, topping the Billboard 200 Chart, and selling more than half a million copies in only a week.

Kelly’s eighth album “Double Up” was released in December 2006, and was followed by “Untitled” on 1 December 2009, “Love Letter” on 14 December 2010 and “Write Me Back” on 26 June 2012; his final album “12 Nights of Christmas” was released on 21 October 2016.

Kelly was sued for the first time in 1996, when Tiffany Hawkins accused him of having sexual intercourse with her in 1991, when she was 15 and he was 24; she claimed that Kelly encouraged her to have group sex with him and other underage girls – the case was settled in 1998 for $250,000.

A video began circulating the internet on 3 February 2002, which showed Kelly having sex and urinating on an underage girl. He was indicted in Chicago on child pornography in June of the same year, and was arrested on 22 January 2003, after the police had found pictures of a naked teenage girl at his home, the same girl featured in the above mentioned video; the girl refused to testify, and Kelly was found not guilty in June 2008.

Several organizations called for a boycott of Kelly’s music, and Spotify announced on 10 May 2018 that it would no longer be promoting his music, while Pandora and Apple Music did the same two days later. He was dropped from RCA Records in January 2019, and his YouTube channel shut down a year later.

Following these events, Kelly’s former wife Andrea revealed that she suffered physical and mental abuse during their 13 years of marriage.
