Gabriel-Kane was mostly interested in music while growing up, and began taking singing lessons at the age of eight. He was 15 when he appeared in his first school play, but still remained focused on singing rather than on acting.

Prior to his retiring in 2018, Daniel appeared in 30 movies and TV series, and is perhaps still best known for his playing of the lead character Hawkeye in the evergreen 1992 action adventure movie “The Last of the Mohicans”, directed by Michael Mann, and which also starred Madeleine Stowe and Russell Means. It follows three trappers who’ve found themselves involved in a war between the Indians and the French; the movie won eight of its 25 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Sound.

He became famous following his portrayal of Johnny in the 1985 romantic comedy movie “My Beautiful Laundrette”, in which he starred alongside Saeed Jaffrey and Roshan Seth. It follows two male lovers who’ve opened a laundromat, and the film won six of its 13 award nominations, including an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Some of Daniel’s following notable performances were in the 1988 romantic movie “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”, the 1993 romantic film “The Age of Innocence”, and the 1996 historical movie “The Crucible”.

In 2002, he played Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting in the critically acclaimed crime movie “Gangs of New York”, starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz.
