Early life, family, educational background

American actor Benito James Martinez was born on 28 June 1971, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, making him a Cancer. His parents are Bennie Martinez and Margarita Martinez-Cannon, and he has two sisters, Patrice and Benita all of whom have Cuban ethnicity. When he was eight years old, Benito played the vihuela for Mariachi Del Norte de Bennie Martinez, his father’s mariachi band. A year later, he began acting in a production at La Compania de Teatro de Albuquerque, a bilingual theater co-founded by Margarita.

He spent the next few years of his life performing at the theater and in his father’s band, but acting eventually won him over completely. Benito enrolled at Hollywood High Performing Arts Magnet, before attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), earning an advanced certificate in stage combat and the general three-year program degree. Other celebrities who attended the drama school are Donald Sutherland, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Kim Cattrall.

Benito’s best-known roles are as Todd Denver in “How to Get Away with Murder,” Luis Torres in “Sons of Anarchy,” Sheriff Diaz in “13 Reasons Why”, and LAPD Captain David Aceveda in “The Shield.”

Patrice Martinez

The American actress, also known as Patrice Camhi and Patricia Martinez, was born on 12 June 1963 in Albuquerque, the older sister of Benito and Benita. Patrice earned her drama degree from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, and is best known for her starring role in the ‘90s series “Zorro” and as Carmen in “Three Amigos.” Patrice was married to director and producer Daniel Camhi from 1987 to 1992, so in the first two seasons of “Zorro” she was credited as Patrice Camhi, but following their divorce, from season three onwards she was credited as ‘Patrice Martinez.’ Patrice sadly passed away on 24 December 2018 in her home in Burbank, California following a long illness.


After Benito graduated from the LAMDA, he returned to the US and relocated to Los Angeles. His first role was in 1988 as Fernandez, in an episode of “The Bronx Zoo” entitled “The Gospel Truth” From 1990 to 1992, he played José Macias in two episodes of “Zorro,” and was then Savedra in an episode of “Reasonable Doubts” entitled “Silence.” The following year he was Salazer in an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and Guillermo in the film “Sunset Grill.” In 1995 Benito was cast as Young Paco Sánchez in the film “My Family,” Dr. Julio Ruiz in the film “Outbreak,” and in 1996 he guest-appeared in “The X-Files” and “Chicago Hope.”

In 2001 Benito played Lieutenant Gomez in “NYPD Blue,” Officer Dave in “Touched by an Angel” in the episode “The Birthday Present,” and Raoul in “Once and Again.” 2002 was a very busy year for Benito, he voiced Horatio Hidalgo in the series “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?” in the episode entitled “High-Tech House of Horrors,” he played a Boss in an episode of “Firefly,” Dr. Leonard Bushnell in “For the People,” a Police Officer in “American Family,” he voiced Lone Star in five episodes of “¡Mucha Lucha!” from 2002 to 2005, and from 2002 to 2008 he played David Aceveda in a total of 86 episodes of “The Shield.” Benito portrayed El Curandero/Man #2 in the 2003 film “Scooby-Doo! And the Monster of Mexico,” and Ed Fuentes in “Karen Sisco” in the episode, “Blown Away.”

He played Lonestar, Don Reyes in the 2004 film “¡Mucha Lucha!: The Return of El Maléfico,” Brett in “Saw,” Billie’s Manager in “Million Dollar Baby.” In 2006, he appeared in an episode of “Bones” as Thomas Vega, in “Monk” as Foreman – Juror No. 7, in “Numb3rs” as Arthur Ruiz, as Ramsey in the film “End Game,” and Officer Jones in “Kill Your Darlings.” In 2007 he played Senator Espinosa in the “Standoff” episode entitled “The Kids in the Hall,” in 2009 he portrayed Detective Sanchez in the film “Not Forgotten,” Ronnie Rodriguez in eight episodes of “Saving Grace” from 2009 to 2010, and the Police Chief in the Pilot episode of “The Forgotten.” The following year, Benito played Alvarez in “Unthinkable,” Charlie Sheridan in the series “Lie to Me,” David in “Burn Notice,” David Valdez in the film “The Dry Land,” and Victor Aruz in two episodes of “24.”

He played Captain Santos in an episode “Torchwood: Miracle Day” in 2011 as well as Jorge in “Covert Affairs,” Luis Torres in 16 episodes of “Sons of Anarchy” from 2011 to 2012, Edgar/Leviathan in five episodes of “Supernatural” from 2011 to 2012, and as Javier Ramirez in a 2012 “Major Crimes” episode. Benito’s next film role was as Gabriel Márez in 2013’s “Bless Me, Ultima,” he also played Special Agent Sam Walker in “Castle,” an Officer in “Dallas,” Captain Alexio Barros in “Almost Human,” and Gonzalo Vargas in “NCIS: Los Angeles” in 2013. Benito was Jesse Soria in “Beyond the Lights” in 2014, Senator Hector Mendoza in seven episodes of “House of Cards” from 2014 to 2015, Alfredo Armas in “Graceland” in 2014, Alonzo Gutierrez in 11 episodes of “American Crime” in 2015, and Chief Raul Montoya in the 2015 “Criminal Minds” episode entitled “Outlaw.”
