Who is Amy Morton?

American actress and movie director Amy Morton, was born in Oak Park, Illinois USA, on 3 April 1959, making her zodiac sign Aries. She’s had roles in nearly 30 movies and TV series, and is probably still best known for her portrayal of Kara Bingham in the 2009 romantic comedy movie “Up in the Air”, directed by Jason Reitman, and which starred George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. It follows Ryan Bingham whose job is to fly around the country and fire people, and who’s now fallen in love; the movie won 75 of its 152 award nominations, including six nominations for Oscar, with some of these having been for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing and one for each of the lead characters’ performance.

Education and early life

Amy was raised in Oak Park alongside her four older siblings, by their father Joe and mother Jean; not a lot is known about Amy’s family, because she respects their privacy, while it’s known that her brother Bruce Alexander Morton was an American TV news correspondent for CNN and CBS News, and that he passed away on 5 September 2014, aged 83.

Amy fell in love with acting at the age of 12, after having watched a theatre play together with her family. She studied at Oak Park and River Forest High School, at which she was a member of the drama club, while she also practiced creative writing and took dancing lessons.

She matriculated in 1977, and then enrolled at Triton College, while she transferred to Clarke University a year later, but dropped out before graduating, wanting to pursue a career in the film industry.

Roles in movies

Amy’s debut film role was her playing of Karen in the 1983 thriller “Through Naked Eyes”, directed by John Llewellyn Moxey, and which starred David Soul, Pam Dawber and Fionnula Flanagan. It follows a musician who’s believed to be a serial killer responsible for the death of a couple of his neighbors.

Amy’s following film role came in 1992, when cast to play Ann in the popular romantic comedy drama “Straight Talk”, which Barnet Kellman directed, and which starred Dolly Parton, James Woods and Griffin Dunne; it follows a woman who’s moved from a small city to Chicago, and has become a popular radio show host. A couple of Amy’s following roles were in the thriller drama “Kiss of a Killer”, the action crime drama “Falling Down”, and the drama “Angel Street”, all released in 1993.

Between 1993 and 2009, she appeared in only a single movie: the 1999 mystery crime drama “8MM”; directed by Joel Schumacher, it starred Nicolas Cage and Joaquin Phoenix, and follows a private investigator who’s been hired to find out whether a movie’s authentic or not; the film won two of its four award nominations.

The year 2009 saw Amy appear in both the romantic drama “The Greatest” and the above mentioned romantic comedy drama “Up in the Air”, but has since appeared in only three movies: the 2010 drama “Matadors”, the 2011 comedy drama “The Dilemma” and the 2013 drama “Bluebird”.

Roles in TV series

Amy’s debut TV series role was her playing of Pregnant Girl in the 1986 episode “Pilot” of the mystery drama “Crime Story”, and she could then have been seen in the 1989 episode “Endgame” of the action crime drama “The Equalizer”, the 1992 episode “Mrs. Cage” of the romantic comedy “American Playhouse” and two episodes of the 1992 crime drama “Angel Street”.

Her following role came in 2009, when cast to play Mrs Walters in the episode “Shifting Equilibrium” of the popular romantic drama “ER”, which Michael Crichton created, and which starred Julianna Margulies, George Clooney and Anthony Edwards; it tells the story of Chicago’s County General Hospital and its employees, the series aired from 1994 to 2009, and won 179 of its 549 award nominations.

Amy was then cast to appear in the 2011 episode “Who We Are” of the romantic comedy drama “Private Practice”, nine episodes of the 2012 crime drama “Boss”, and the 2014 episode “Flo” of the comedy drama “Girls”.

Since 2014, she’s been playing Trudy Platt in both the action crime drama “Chicago P. D.” (194 episodes) and the action drama “Chicago Fire” (34 episodes).

Theatre

Amy’s also quite popular for her career as a theatre actress. She’s been a member of the Steppenwolf Theater since 1997, and has spent most of her career appearing in plays in Chicago, Illinois, including “Awake and Sing”, “The Pillowman”, and “American Buffalo”.

Amy appeared in her first Broadway play in 2001, starring alongside Gary Sinise in the revival of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, and she then played Barbara in the first ever production of the tragicomedy “August: Osage County”, which premiered on 28 June 2007; for her performance, Amy was nominated for both a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award.

In 2012 and 2013, she starred in the play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

Other credits

Amy’s been featured in multiple documentaries, such as the 2000 movie “Steppenwolf Theatre Company: 25 Years on the Edge”, the 2004 movie “Off-Loop, on Stage”, and the 2008 series “Working in Theatre”.

She’s made a guest appearance in talk-shows “Theater Talk” and “The View”, amongst several others.

Amy’s won one of her six award nominations – a 2013 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Award for Best Actress, for her performance in “Bluebird”.

Love life and husband

Amy’s amongst the most secretive of actresses when it comes to sharing the details of her love life with the public, but it’s still widely known that she’s today married to her second husband, Rob Milburn.

Rob’s an American sound designer who’s kept Amy company during some of her red carpet events, but prefers to be left out of media; neither has spoken about when they met or married, but it’s widely believed that they exchanged vows sometime in the second half of the 2000s.

Amy had previously been married to American actor, producer and director William Petersen – she doesn’t have children from neither marriage, which has made some of her fans believe that she’s infertile, but Amy hasn’t addressed these rumors.

She’s married to her second husband Rob Milburn as of November 2022, and doesn’t have children.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Amy’s done quite a lot of charity work, and mostly enjoys donating money and volunteering with organizations which aim to improve the quality of life for war veterans and underprivileged children.

She has an Instagram account, but has uploaded only 10 pictures onto the social media network, most of which show her spending time with her friends; she’s followed by more than 6,000 people.

Amy’s been all around the US to shoot for her movies and TV series, as well as to perform in theatre plays; she’s also vacationed in many countries all around the world, and her favorite destination is Bali, Indonesia.

She’s a lover of animals, with squirrels and raccoons being her favorites.

Amy’s favorite actresses are Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway, and some of her favorite movies are “Dark Places”, “Young Adult” and “The Last Face”.
